History of Geylang
Monday, February 28, 2011 | 7:11 AM

Geylang was a settlement for the “Orang Laut” or sea people and Malays. The area had coconut plantations and was once known as Geylang Kelapa. “Kelapa” means coconut in Malay. But since the start of the 20th century it has been known as Geylang Serai. “Serai” is Malay for lemon grass, which was also found in the area.
