History of Kallang River
Monday, February 28, 2011 | 7:13 AM

As Singapore's longest river, the Kallang River was home to the original inhabitants, the Biduanda Orang Kallang, or "People of the Sea," who were part of the larger Orang Laut community. Kallang may refer to the Malay word "kilang," or "mill' or "factory." With expertise in fishing and gathering marine and forest products, the Orang Laut bartered or sold surpluses to the inland people or Asian and European traders.

** The Kallang River is Singapore's longest river at 6 miles.
