HIstory of Singapore River
Monday, February 28, 2011 | 7:19 AM

Historically, the city of Singapore initially grew into the port so the river mouth became the centre of trade, commerce and finance around the port . Pollution occurred when there was some heavy traffic going around near the Singapore River. This caused water pollution, and it even caused garbage and other waste to go into the water. Boats that were on the water caused oil spill also. Then in 1977, Lee Kuan Yew asked people to clear all the pollutions. Ten years later in 1987, the clean-up of the Singapore River and Kallang Basin was completed. After the massive clean-up, people can now engage in activities. Today, speedboats, dragon boats, pedal-boats and sampans can be seen plying on the clean waterways of the Singapore River. The river is now part of the Marina Reservoir. Now there is a dam, it is now known as the Marina Barrage.
